Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal (gum) disease is characterized by an excessive amount of plaque and calculus (tartar) which have accumulated around the teeth, causing deterioration to the surrounding area of the teeth and jawbone.

At BR Dental Care, Dr. Suadi works to maintain the overall health of your mouth, including your gums. Periodontal disease can be identified by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If left untreated, it will eventually begin to destroy the gums and bone.

The treatment of periodontal disease may vary based on the severity of your diagnosis. If the progression of the disease is diagnosed and treating commences in the early stages, one or two cleanings may be all that is required. Instructions on improving oral hygiene habits will be given by the dentist and scheduling regular cleanings will be discussed.

If the disease has progressed to an advanced level, a special periodontal cleaning is recommended. This cleaning is called “scaling and root planing.” Tartar and plaque will be removed from above and below the gum line (scaling) and rough spots on the roots’ surfaces will be made smooth (planing). This will allow for your teeth and gums to recuperate from any damage incurred by periodontal disease.

If periodontal conditions do not improve after scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery may be required to stop further progression and to improve the health of your teeth and mouth.
