A Crown Can Often Be Used to Repair a Badly Decayed Tooth

A small cavity that is left untreated for too long will inevitably spread and compromise more and more tooth enamel. It is possible that so much enamel can be lost that your dentist, Dr. [doctor_name], cannot effectively repair the problem with a standard filling.

In a situation like this, [heshe] will usually recommend restoring the entire enamel layer of the tooth with a dental crown in [city], [state].

A crown is a hollow replica of the tooth enamel layer, and it is made from either porcelain, gold or base metal alloys. It will eventually be anchored to a post-like abutment that is formed from the core structures of the tooth.

To form the abutment, Dr. [doctor_name] will use a drill to remove all of the tooth enamel. Then, [heshe] will make an impression of the abutment and the surrounding teeth. This impression will be sent to the dental lab where your permanent crown will be made.

A hard, plastic cap, called a temporary crown, will be cemented over the abutment. It does not actually restore the full function of the tooth. It is only meant to protect the abutment while you wait for your new crown to be ready.

Dr. [doctor_name] will call you back into [practice_name] for a follow-up appointment when your permanent crown is ready. Then, [heshe] will remove the temporary crown and your new crown will be cemented securely into place.

If you have an untreated cavity on one of your teeth, you should not delay in contacting us at [phone] to have the tooth treated and restored.
